HCA Consumer Forum: SA Health Care Plan

On Wednesday, 18 January 2012, HCA hosted a Forum on the proposed extension of the SA Health Care Plan.

Guided by the Generational Health Review, the State Government developed South Australia’s Health Care Plan 2007-2016 (PDF 1.85MB) to meet the health challenges of an ageing population, increasing incidence of chronic diseases, international workforce shortages and ageing infrastructure.

Released in 2007, the 10 year plan proposes investment in major hospitals and promotes healthy lifestyles and illness prevention through GP Plus Health Care Centres.

It also details changes aimed at achieving:

  • better coordinated hospital services
  • more primary health care services
  • more elective surgery
  • less pressure on emergency departments and,
  • improved management of chronic disease.

SA Health is currently working on extending the plan to 2021 in order to maintain a 10 year horizon. This forum was an opportunity to hear about the plan extension and have your say about the principles upon which it is to be based.

The keynote speaker was Sinead O’Brien, Executive Director, Statewide Services Strategy, SA Health. A copy of her presentation is available here.
