On Wednesday, 8 February 2012 HCA hosted a Members Forum to look at the proposed Australian Safety and Quality Goals for Health Care. The Forum was attended by HCA Board Members, Members and Staff.
The proposed Australian Safety and Quality Goals for Health Care were developed by the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care in response to a request from the Australian Health Ministers Advisory Council. This is an opportunity to agree on the key safety and quality challenges that could form the basis for coordinated national action across all sectors and settings of care to improve health outcomes and the efficiency and effectiveness of the health system.
The Commission proposes three draft Goals, summarised below. A copy of the consultation paper is available to download from the Commission’s website at www.safetyandquality.gov.au.The first two of these Goals identify specific priority areas that describe initial areas for coordinated action.
- Goal 1: Safety of care - that people receives their health care without experiencing harm.
- Priority 1: Medication safety - to reduce harm to people from adverse medicines events and improve quality use of medicines.
- Priority 2: Healthcare associated infection - to reduce harm to people from healthcare associated infections through effective infection control and antimicrobial stewardship.
- Goal 2: Appropriateness of care - that people receive appropriate, evidence-based care.
- Priority 1: Type 2 diabetes - to provide appropriate, evidence-based care for people living with type 2 diabetes.
- Priority 2: Management of acute coronary syndrome and stroke - to provide appropriate, evidence-based care for people with acute coronary syndrome or stroke.
- Goal 3: Partnering with patients and consumers - that there are effective partnerships between patients, consumers and healthcare providers and organisations at all levels of healthcare provision, planning and evaluation.
