HCA E-HEALTH CONSUMER SURVEY UPDATE
In November 2011, HCA commenced a research project that focuses on developing a better understanding of the attitudes of consumers within South Australia towards the introduction of eHealth.
A survey was circulated through the HCA eBulletin, community radio, various newsletters and consumer representative groups. Survey responses closed on the 24 December. We had a very pleasing response rate with 110 consumer responses and 12 stakeholder groups.
Some of the preliminary results to date include:
- 85.46 % of consumers viewed their overall healthcare experiences as being good to excellent
- 55% of consumers have previously heard of eHealth
- 58.88% of consumers supported its introduction
- the top three concerns consumers have with eHealth are privacy, security, and fear of records being hacked or breached
- 52% of consumers believe the PCEHR (Personally Controlled Electronic Health Record) should be an opt-out model
- 58.1% of consumers state they will opt-in if their doctor does compared to 32.9% if their doctor does not
- 86.67% of consumers view it important to have access to all of their medical information available at one place at one time
- 80.26% of consumers view it as important to have the ability to choose who has access to their records
- 83.33% of consumers view it as important to have the ability to restrict certain information from being seen on their record
- 74.67% of consumers view it as important to add information to their PCEHR
- 68% of consumers view it as important to have the ability to delete information from their PCEHR
- 86.48% of consumers view it as important to have the ability to correct information in their PCEHR
- consumers visited chiropractors, dentists, GPs, nurses or midwifes, osteopaths, pharmacists, physiotherapists, psychologists, or specialled medical professionals 5 or more times in the last six months.
These preliminary results will form the basis of a discussion paper being prepared for HCA about consumers’ views in relation to eHealth and to assist HCA in its advocacy role.
We want to say again a great big THANK YOU to all of you who participated in the survey.
