  • understanding inherited leukaemias
  • improving outcomes for patients with vascular devices
  • obesity and heart failure
  • investigating E-Cigarettes.

2018 Annual General Meeting

We invite you to come along and join us for our 2018 Annual General Meeting. Following the formalities, we have three special guest speakers who will discuss partnerships in best practice. Allison Willis from HCA will talk about the Northern Adelaide Local Health Network Consumer and Community Engagement Project, followed by Grant Phelps from Central Adelaide Local Health Network, who will speak about our partnership on the Consumer and Community Engagement Strategy from the perspective of the Local Health Network. The final speaker, Lily Griffin, a consumer from the Women’s and Children’s Health Network will speak about the outcome of working in partnership with HCA on consumer and community engagement by looking at the recent evaluation. Following the meeting we invite you to join the Board and Staff members for nibbles and networking.

Health and Well-Being Strategy 2019 - 2023 Workshop

Last week HCA supported SA Health by recruiting consumers to attend the Health and Well-Being Strategy 2019 - 2023 workshop to inform the health priorities that should be included in the Health Strategy 2019 - 2023. Consumers worked together with SA Health and Local Health Network Staff to identify their ideas on state health priorities for the next five years and beyond. The Strategy is a system-level strategy developed by the State Government to meet future health challenges. The workshop was registered to capacity with twenty consumers participating in addition to 180 staff in attendance. Consumers Health Forum of Australia – National Election Platform Consultation 2019

Yesterday, HCA welcomed the Consumers Health Forum (CHF) of Australia who hosted a consultation for their South Australian members. The consultation focused on national-level policy, and reform priorities from South Australian health consumers' perspectives. This was one of several consultations which is being held across the country to help inform the CHF 2019 Federal Election priorities. Submission on the review of EPAS

On Tuesday 30 October 2018, HCA facilitated a small group of consumers to provide feedback on the Review of the Electronic Patient Administration System (EPAS) consultation paper. HCA’s submission on the consultation paper was informed by this meeting, and the responses received through email. Thank you to everyone who provided feedback. Health Consumers Tasmania

Work has commenced on building a new health consumer organisation for Tasmania. The aim of this organisation is to create an independent health consumer voice in Tasmania, which until recently was the only state in Australia that did not have an independent peak health consumer organisation. Bruce Levett has been appointed as the Executive Officer and commenced work in late August 2018. HCA had the pleasure of meeting Bruce as part of his induction. SALHN Forum: Draft Adult Community Mental Health Service Plan

The Southern Adelaide Local Health Network (SALHN) Is hosting a consultation on the draft proposed Adult Community Mental Health Service Plan. SALHN has been undertaking a process of redesigning Adult Community Mental Health Services in the South, in response to SA Health Recommendations. The proposed Service Plan sets out the details of how Adult Community Mental Health Services will be organised across the South, including the range of service pathways and treatment options to be offered, as well as how consumers can access these services. Consumers with lived experience of mental health or who are caring for someone with a mental health condition, is encouraged to attend. You can find out more and register here.

South Australian State Population Health Conference

The SA State Population Health Conference is the premier developmental opportunity for emerging public health researchers and practitioners to present their work to a local audience. In 2018, they are embracing diversity, and acknowledging the role that each of us play in supporting populations to improve their health. The Conference focus is on developing links between research, advocacy, practice and policy. The Uluru Statement and the end of history

The 21st Annual Hawke Lecture is to be delivered by award winning Australian journalist and writer Stan Grant. In this lecture Stan outlines how the Uluru Statement represents a chance to tell Australia’s story anew, to tell the truth of a nation that has its roots tens of thousands of years before the landing of the First Fleet. He says the rejection of the Uluru Statement is a moment lost, a moment that could have completed Australian liberalism. You can find out more and register here.

Conflicts of Interest workshop

HCA is hosting a free workshop for health consumer or carer representatives, or advocates with an interest in learning about conflicts of interest in health care.
 
The workshop will be run by two internationally respected academics with expertise in this area, Professor Lisa Bero from the University of Sydney, and Dr Ray Moynihan, from Bond University.
The following will be covered (using plain English):

- Introduction to the scientific evidence about how sponsorship from drug companies and other industry groups affects medical education and research
- Introduction to accessible databases that can be searched to find out more about drug company payments to doctors and patient groups

This will be followed by a facilitated discussion about conflicts of interest.

Morning tea and a light lunch will be provided. The workshop will be evaluated and information relating to this will be sent via email to participants in the week prior to the workshop.
