In April 2015 the Australian Minister for Health, the Hon Sussan Ley MP, announced the formation of the Medicare Benefits Schedule Review Taskforce.
The taskforce will review MBS in its entirety, considering individual items as well as the rules and legislation governing their application, with the overarching goal of promoting the provision of the best patient outcomes for our health expenditure.
A key part of this approach will be ensuring that MBS items are evidence based, fit for purpose and reflect contemporary medical practice.
HCA and consumer advocates attended a related Consumers Health Forum of Australia workshop in October to provide advice and related experiences about the MBS and the purpose of the review. Further updates and advice about future workshops will be provided through our Enews.
